ELON, N.C. — Jenifer Rhodes tallied 20 points and seven rebounds, and Elon shot 55 percent in the second half to top Georgia Southern 85-60 in a Southern Conference women’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym.
MiMi DuBose led the Eagles (7-16, 5-7) with 11 points, and Sierra Kirkland tallied eight points and eight rebounds. Danielle Roberts scored nine, and Anna Claire Knight added eight.
Rhodes was one of four Elon players in double figures. Kelsey Harris notched 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Phoenix (10-12, 6-5). Zora Stephenson scored 16, hitting 4-of-5 from long distance, and Sam Coffer recorded 12 points and three assists.
After Georgia Southern trimmed an 11-point Elon lead to five late in the first half, the Phoenix scored the final seven points of the period and opened the second frame with a 25-6 spurt to blow the game open. Rhodes netted eight in the second-half stretch, and Coffer scored seven.

Elon was 18-of-33 from the floor in the second half and made 7-of-11 from 3-point range in the game. The Eagles shot 31 percent in the second half and 34 percent for the game.

“We did a poor job of guarding the 3-point arc and let their shooters get comfortable early,” said Georgia Southern coach Chris Vozab. “That coupled with some turnovers that led directly to baskets put us on our heels and unfortunately, we never pushed back with the aggressiveness or energy we needed to get back in the game.”

Harris scored six points in a 12-4 Elon run as the Phoenix led 19-11 midway through the first half. The margin grew to as many as 11 points, before Georgia Southern used an 8-2 spurt to cut the lead to five.

DuBose netted the first five of the run, and Lacie Dowling capped it with a triple from the top of the key, making the score 35-30 with 3:32 left. The Phoenix responded by scoring the final seven points of the frame and led 42-30 at halftime.

Georgia Southern continues a three-game SoCon road swing at UNCG Monday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
