After an armed robbery and assault Saturday at a home on Morris Street, Statesboro police arrested a man on six new charges ranging from burglary to sexual battery as well as on an Atlanta wanted notice.

Charles Clifton, 50, also of Morris Street, has been charged with armed robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment and sexual battery. The “wanted person” charge out of Atlanta was for failure to report as a registered sex offender, Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner said in a news release issued Monday.

Armed with a knife, Clifton forced his way into a Morris Street residence and assaulted a woman, 61, according to police.

During the assault, the woman suffered a minor injury to her finger. Clifton then took several items from the home and fled the area, Turner said.

The woman ran to a neighbor’s home and called police. After officers arrived at the scene, Officer Casey Tomlinson found Clifton hiding behind a home on Rountree Street and arrested him, Turner said.

Clifton was being held Monday at the Bulloch County Jail awaiting further court action.

Anyone with information concerning the case is asked to call Detective Kevin Wadley at the Statesboro Police Department at (912) 764-9911.
