Local Roundup: Jackets escape with region win


    SAVANNAH — Matt McBride hit two huge 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets escaped from New Hampstead with a 61-59 win on Friday.
    The Jackets (13-7, 10-3 Region I-AAA) were led by Preston Smith (15 points) and  Kaelin Jones (9). McBride and Sheldon Hendrix added eight points each.
    SEB is back in action today on the road.

Lady Gators don't miss a beat
    AUGUSTA — The Bulloch Academy Lady Gators took care of Westminster, winning on the road 50-34 on Friday.
    The Gators (22-1, 4-0 Region 4-IAAA) were led by Chelsea Oglesby's 16 points. Ashley Burke added 11.

Lady Tigers dominate JCHS
    CLAXTON — Jenkins County had no answer for the Claxton Lady Tigers, who won 72-38 Friday at home.
    Claxton (18-3, 7-1) had four players reach double figures. Devonna Brewton scored 16 points, Taylor Fiveash added 14, Keri Brown recorded a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds and Nyeisha Kirkland added 10 points.

Jenkins County holds off Claxton
    CLAXTON — Jenkins County (7-13, 4-4 Region 3A-A) got a road win at Claxton, winning 64-57 on Friday.
    Claxton (9-10, 4-4) was led by Cornelious Taylor, who scored 26 points.

GSU hires running backs coach
    Dell McGee, a former NFL defensive back and head football coach at Carver, Columbus, was named running backs coach at Georgia Southern on Friday.
    McGee, a former Auburn cornerback, spent the last year as an analyst at his alma mater.
    McGee was the coach at Carver for eight years and guided his undefeated team to the 2007 Class AAA state championship. McGee posted an 88-19 overall record with a 21-6 mark in the playoffs, which included six region championships.

GSU plans signing day event
    Georgia Southern fans are invited to attend a  signing day event on Wednesday at Paulson Stadium's Bishop Field House as head football coach Willie Fritz will review his first class of signees. 
    Doors open at 5:30 p.m.  and the program begins at 6 p.m., with an introduction from director of athletics Tom Kleinlein. Fritz will introduce his coaching staff and each assistant coach will present a highlight video and speak about the recruits.
    GSU will offer door prizes and refreshments to attendees.

Zaliagiris transfers to GSU
    Georgia Southern volleyball coach Dustin Wood announced Friday that Isabella Zaliagiris has transferred to GSU and joined the volleyball team.
    Zaliagiris is enrolled in classes and has begun practicing with the team in its spring workouts. She is a 6-foot-2 sophomore right side who played her freshman season at George Mason in 2012 and sat out the 2013 campaign. She is eligible to suit up for the Eagles in the upcoming season, their first as members of the Sun Belt Conference.

Eagles head back to Florida
    ORLANDO, Fla. — Georgia Southern men’s tennis travels south this weekend to face Central Florida and Stetson. Coming off of two losses earlier this season, the Eagles are motivated to bring home some wins.
    Last time out, the Eagles fell to Florida Atlantic at home 1-4. Senior Marco Osorio earned a win against Harrison Heysek (6-1, 6-1). The previous weekend the Eagles were defeated by Georgia Tech, 1-6.
    Freshman Christian Kerrigan posted a win against Anish Sharma (6-5, 6-1).
