Local Roundup: Portal beats defending state champs


    PORTAL — Led by forward Trent Thomas, the Portal Panthers dominated defending the Class A Public state champion Wilkinson County from the opening tip to the final buzzer, winning 66-48 at home on Saturday.
    Stacey Morgan added 20 points for Portal (16-3).
    Thomas did most of the early damage, scoring 21 of Portal's first 39 points.
    Wilkinson (14-5) won the last matchup against Portal, 77-50, on Feb. 8, 2013.
    The teams will rematch on Feb. 7, when Portal travels to Irwinton.
    The Panthers are back in action at home on Tuesday against Savannah Christian at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Panthers hold off Wilkinson
    Wilkinson County chipped away at a big Portal lead throughout the second half, but the Lady Panthers converted 10 fourth-quarter free throws and held on for a 38-34 win on Saturday.
    Portal (9-11) was helped to a fast start by Breyonna Raymond, who scored a game-high 23 points.

Jackets split with Bryan County
    PEMBROKE — The Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets were voctorious in the opener, but the boys fell in a heartbreaker, 54-53 on Saturday at Bryan County.
    The Yellow Jackets (12-7) were led by Preston Smith (14 points) and Kaelin Jones (10 points).
    SEB hosts Tattnall County on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m.

GSU rifle scores big
    CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Georgia Southern women's rifle team shot an air rifle score of 2205 at The Citadel Invitational in Charleston, S.C. Saturday.
    The two-day meet, which continues today, was the first competition for the Eagles since Nov. 9 at North Georgia.
    The Eagles posted their third best score of the season behind three scores of 550 or better.
    Kathryn Youngblood led the team with a score of 554.
    Youngblood has now shot a 550 or better in five of her six matches this season.

Eagles sweep Gardner-Webb, UNF
    Georgia Southern swimming and diving defeated Gardner-Webb 190-103 and University of North Florida 195-96 on senior day.
    Their last home meet of the season resulted in three broken records and two divers qualifying for zones.
