The Boys and Girls Club of Bulloch County will be holding their 2nd Annual Steak and Burger Dinner this Thursday a 6 p.m. The event will be held at the First Baptist Church of Statesboro.
The featured speaker for the event is Keni Thomas, primarily a country singer/songwriter who performs with his band, “Cornbread.” Four of his songs were featured in the film “Sweet Home Alabama” and one of those songs, “Alabama Home,” is being used by NASCAR in their ads for the upcoming Talladega race.
Thomas is also a motivational speaker, drawing upon his experiences as an Army Ranger to teach lessons on leadership. The movie “Black Hawk Down” is based upon his company’s mission in Mogadishu, Somalia.
“It’s really the horse I use to ride in and talk about leadership and I mean leadership at every level,” said Thomas. “I try and stress the most that it’s not necessarily the person in charge - the general, the manager or the president. Its also the person in the very back of the line - the private, the brand new employee or the volunteer - who the only person they’re leading is themself.
“If they’re leading by example and setting an example for other people to follow, the team around them will become stronger. And the people around them take notice. That’s the message I try to get across to every body.”
Mike Backus, Resource Development Director for Bulloch County, said there are still 12 seats available for the dinner and speech. The costs for seats is $100 or a table can be purchased for $750.
A golf tournament will be held in conjunction with the dinner. Tracy Ham’s Clubs for Kids Golf Tournament will take place next Friday, Sep. 28, at Willow Lake Country Club in Metter, Ga.
Sponsored by First Southern National Bank, the tournament will be a four-man scramble. Entry fee is $300 per team. Tracy Ham will make an apperance at the tournament.
Whether you’re looking to sign up a team for the golf tournament or purchase a table for the dinner, call Mike Bachus at (912) 515-4051.
The dinner is Thursday at 6 p.m. All proceeds from both events benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Bulloch County.
