Local Roundup: Knights advance to championship

    Tyler Goodman drilled a 3-pointer with less than a minute to go and Dra Harrison hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds on the clock to lead William James Middle School to a 27-24 win over Richmond Hill on Friday in the semifinals of the Coastal Empire Region tournament.
    William James (16-0) advances to the championship. The Knights will play t Screven County Middle School today at home at 12:30 p.m.

Buie reaches 1,000, SHS girls fall
    South Effingham left the Devils Den on Friday with a 64-58 win over the Statesboro Lady Blue Devils.
    Shanikwa Buie led SHS (11-8, 2-1 Region 3A-AAAA) with 16 points, bringing her career scoring total over 1,000 points.
    South Effingham was led by Tia Gerrmaine's 23 points.

Blue Devils roll past South Effingham
    Zaquavian Smith and O'Aaron Ware each recorded a double-double and the Statesboro Blue Devils knocked off South Effingham 60-43 at home on Friday in region action.
    Ware (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Smith (19, 10) led the way for Statesboro (15-5, 2-1 Region    3A-AAAA), while Jaylen Rawls added 12 points.
    Statesboro returns to action today at 6 p.m. on the road at Burke County.

GSU football adds JuCo transfer
    Ken Thomas, the leading rusher from East Mississippi Community College’s 2013 NJCAA title team, signed with Georgia Southern and enrolled in classes this week. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound running back from West Point, Miss., spent two years with coach Buddy Stephens and the Lions, helping lead East Mississippi to a 12-0 record last year en route to the championship.
    As a sophomore, Thomas ran for 1,334 yards, averaging 9.0 yards per carry with a team-best 18 touchdowns on the NJCAA’s top-ranked offense.

Eagles to host softball camps
    Georgia Southern Softball will host its 2013 winter softball camps on Jan. 25 and Feb. 1 at Eagle Field in Statesboro.

    The camp is designed to cover mechanics, skills, and includes dozens of drills to help improve play at the plate and in the field while covering all aspects of the game. The participants will be divided based on age and ability so that everyone will get the most out of the camp.
    Check in is set for 8:30 a.m. each morning at the GSU Softball Complex which is located at 55 Fair Road on the campus of Georgia Southern University.
GSU men's tennis falls to FAU
    Georgia Southern men’s tennis lost to the Florida Atlantic Owls on Friday with a final score of 4-1.
    In doubles action, Oliver Webb and Nico DeGroof were defeated 6-3, Kyle Hoffman and Rafael Racy lost 6-4, and Albert Codina Sala and Marco were down 5-4 in an unfinished match.
    In the singles bracket, Oliver Webb lost in a tie-breaker to Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff (2-6, 6-2, 6-2). Kyle Hoffman was defeated by FAU’s Richard Meade (6-4, 6-5). Marco Osorio earned a win against Harrison Heysek (6-1, 6-1), securing the Eagles’ only win for the day.
    The Eagles resume play against Central Florida in Orlando on Feb. 1.

SBCPRD Scores
    Seven games were played in Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department youth basketball on Thursday.
    In the Minor Boys league, the Thunder beat the Lakers 29-19 and the Rockets and Spurs tied 28-28. The Trailblazers beat the Timberwolves 28-6 and the Nets topped the Clippers 27-20.
    The Warriors beat the Mavericks 34-18 and the Knicks edged out the Magic 26-25.
    The Celtics and Pacers tied 27-27 and the 76ers topped the Pacers 24-7.
