Chipping sparrow

While it’s true that spring is the best time to watch the most colorful migratory birds in South Georgia backyards, the dead of winter can also bring some satisfying birding with inviting feeders and a little patience. Feeders placed near cover can attract many colorful species into view, such as cardinals, chickadees, titmice, warblers and sparrows. In January, in addition to the birds that remain here year-round, many migratory feathered creatures pass through the area on their way north to weather the heart of the coldest months. And of course, where there are small birds, there are predatory birds, the raptors, such as hawks, falcons, kestrels and the rare eagle.
The best way to bring — and keep — your backyard full of colorful birds is to keep feeders full and fresh water available. Many songbirds are seeking nutrients during the cold, bare winter months and are attracted to seed mixtures that can be purchased at stores that offer gardening and/or pet supplies. Feeders don’t have to be fancy contraptions; often a simple, inexpensive cedar feeder will bring in the birds if it’s placed near brush or cover to help provide protection.
Again, patience is key. You may have to sit quite still for a while before the birds become comfortable enough to feed with you at close enough proximity to get a good look. But it’s usually worth the effort, as backyard birds can bring brilliant colors to an otherwise dreary winter landscape.
