Sam Houston State head coach Willie Fritz will be the next head coach at Georgia Southern.

Gene Schallenberg from the Huntsville (Texas) Item spoke with Fritz on Thursday and confirmed that Fritz accepted the position.

Georgia Southern will introduce Fritz at a news conference at Paulson Stadium's Bishop Fieldhouse at noon Friday.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and the announcement is open to the public.

Fritz has spent the last four years at Sam Houston State, where he guided the Bearkats to an overall 40-14 record and three consecutive trips to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

In 2011 and 2012, SHSU advanced to the national title game and lost to North Dakota State each time.

Under Fritz, the Bearkats were 21-7 in Southland Conference games.

In his career as a head coach in the FCS and Division II, Fritz is 137-61.

He also guided Blinn College to two junior college national titles from 1993-96, going 39-5-1. Before joining Blinn, the college won five games in the previous three seasons.

Fritz guided Central Missouri to an overall record of 97-47 from 1997-2009, including a trip to the Division II playoffs in 2003.

Fritz would become the 12th head coach in Georgia Southern history and ninth since the program was resurrected by Erk Russell in 1981.

Jeff Monken left GSU after four years to take over the Army football program. Monken led the Eagles to a 38-16 overall record, including a 7-3 record in the FCS playoffs, and led the program to its first win over a Football Bowl Subdivision program when the Eagles defeated Florida 26-20 on Nov. 23.

Georgia Southern will join the FBS Sun Belt Conference in July.
