Pry turns down Georgia Southern

Brent Pry is committed to Vanderbilt coach James Franklin and will not be the next head coach at Georgia Southern.
Pry, Georgia Southern’s defensive coordinator in 2010 under Jeff Monken and current co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Vanderbilt, told Jeff Lockridge of the Nashville, Tenn., newspaper The Tennessean on Monday that he turned down GSU so the program could move on with its coaching search.
“I was the leading candidate (at GSU). That’s what I was told,” Pry told Lockridge according to a blog post. “That’s why I didn’t want to delay this any further. I didn’t want to put them in that position. I was told it was my job, so I felt like I needed to let them know.”
Franklin is rumored to be in the running for the head coach vacancy at Penn State, and has also been rumored to be in the running for NFL vacancies with the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns.
Lockridge reported that Pry was interviewed by GSU on Dec. 26, at his home, two days after it was announced that Monken was leaving Georgia Southern to take over at Army.
“My wife and I struggled with this the last ... week or two,” Pry told Lockridge. “We had a fantastic experience when we were (at Georgia Southern). Of course, they’re entering into the Sun Belt Conference and there were a lot of great things about that opportunity. But this decision was more about myself and the opportunity here at Vanderbilt with James, and wanting to be here and wanting to be with James.”
Georgia Southern athletics director Tom Kleinlein said in a statement on Monday that GSU will name its next head coach “soon.”
“I am excited about how our search is progressing,” Kleinlein said. “The search committee and I are pleased with the level of candidates who expressed an interest in our position and with those who have interviewed for the position. I look forward to continuing the evaluation process and naming a head coach soon.”
A source close to the Naval Academy said Navy offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper is expected to interview with GSU a second time. Sam Houston State head coach Willie Fritz is also rumored to be in the running for the job.
