Local Roundup: Panthers win region opener


    PORTAL — The Portal Panthers opened Region 3A-A play with a decisive 61-49 win at home against Savannah Country Day.
    The Panthers (8-2, 1-0) were led by Trent Thomas, who finished with 18 points. Harrison Sherrod added 17 and Stacy Morgan scored 11.
    The Panthers return to action today on the road at Wheeler County at 7:30 p.m.

Portal girls knock off SCD
    PORTAL — The Portal Lady Panthers (6-4, 1-0 Region 3A-A) beat Savannah Country Day 52-39 in the region opener on Friday.
    Breyonna Raymond had a huge night with 24 points. Shyann Hagins added 10.
    Gloria Wiggins helped slam the door with nine fourth-quarter points.

SEB sneaks by for another win
    BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets (6-5, 4-1 Region 1-AAA) held off New Hampstead for a 65-62 win at home on Friday.
    Sheldon Hendrix (19 points), Preston Smith (18) and Lemont Ballard (14) led the Yellow Jackets offensively.
 
Lady Jackets down New Hampstead
    BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets (8-3, 4-1 Region 1-AAA) got a narrow, 44-40 victory at home on Friday over New Hampstead.
    Jasmine Roberts led SEB with 16 points, and Philicia Batton added 13.
    The Jackets return home today at 5 p.m., for a game against Brantley County.

Claxton boys edge SCPS
    CLAXTON — The Claxton Tigers defeated Savannah Christian 43-37 Friday at home in the Region 3A_A opener.
    The Tigers (5-5, 2-0) were led by Jaki Tompkins, who scored 11 points.

Lady Tigers win region opener
    CLAXTON — The Claxton Lady Tigers were too much for visiting Savannah Christian as they won 48-33 on Friday in the Region 3A-A opener.
    Claxton (10-2, 1-0) was led by Keri Brown's double-double. Brown scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
    Taylor Fiveash also scored 14 points, and Devonna Brewton added 13.
