Portal's Stacey Morgan, top, splits G...

PORTAL — The Portal Panthers ripped of a 16-0 run to begin the second half and never looked back, cruising to a 61-45 win over Georgia Military in the final game of Saturday’s action at the Portal Holiday Classic.
Trent Thomas keyed the Portal rout, scoring 12 of his 14 points in the second half. Marquis Wells matched Thomas’s 14, tying him for the team high.
Robert Lee poured in 11 points and Stacey Morgan added nine.
The Bulldogs kept pace with the Panthers (7-1) throughout the first half, but went a total of 6:28 without scoring before Brandon Davis hit a 3 to make it a 42-23 Portal advantage with 1:42 to play in the third quarter.
“Coming into the second half, we wanted to get it inside a little more,” Portal coach Jeff Brannen said. “Georgia Military is a good team, but we thought we could get to them inside. We executed offensively and played good defense to create some opportunities for ourselves.”
GMC saw 10 of its players record points in the contest, but Portal didn’t allow any Bulldogs to find a rhythm as T.J. Foston’s seven points led the team in scoring.
Morgan added two inside buckets to the run started by Thomas in the third quarter and a deep 3 by Lee put the game out of reach midway through the third quarter. The Panther lead reached as high as 21 when Thomas slammed home an alley-oop with 3:36 to play in the game.
The Portal Holiday Classic takes a break today before concluding on Monday with six more games. The Panthers wrap up their tournament slate with a game against South Effingham.

SEB 77, Jenkins County 73
Southeast Bulloch took a big step in its rebuilding process as the Yellow Jackets knocked off Jenkins County – a Final Four participant in the Class A state playoffs last season – by a score of 77-73 during Saturday’s action at the Portal Holiday Classic.
The Eagles led SEB 39-34 at halftime, but three 3-pointers by Lamont Ballard (18 points) late in the third quarter helped the Yellow Jackets pull ahead.
Sheldon Hendrix (14 points) and Matthew McBride (13) each canned a pair of 3s to stave off Jenkins’ rally attempt in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles pulled within a point of SEB on two occasions, but SEB held its ground to draw a pair of charges late in the game and Cole Carter’s two free throws iced the game with 15.6 seconds to play.

Lady Panthers 48, SEB 36
Southeast Bulloch played without star scorer Jasmine Roberts and Portal took full advantage as the Lady Panthers notched a 48-36 win in their matchup at the Portal Holiday Classic.
It was a two-girl show for the Lady Panthers as Breyonna Raymond (24 points) and Shiann Hagins (20) accounted for all but four of Portal’s points on the night.
“We had some girls a little reluctant to shoot, but I thought we played well,” Portal coach Cliff Hubbard said. “We got beat pretty good by Johnson last night, so it was important for us to come back strong.”
