Fundraiser to benefit family of girl killed in accident

A motorcycle club will hold a fundraiser to help a local family buy a memorial headstone in honor of a 10-year-old girl who was killed in a tragic accident.

The Iron Order Motorcycle Club of Statesboro will be set up outside Ryan’s, 806 U.S. Highway 80 E., while the restaurant is open Saturday, from 10:45 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The club will collect money to benefit the family of Chloe Moon Dart, who was a fourth-grader at Sallie Zetterower Elementary.

At about 6 p.m. Nov. 3, she was riding horseback with her family on Old Register Road near Old Register Way when her horse began misbehaving and started running, according to Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch.

When the spooked horse reached the road, it “hesitated,” and Chloe was thrown onto the road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

A pickup truck was traveling south on Old Register Road and swerved to avoid the horse, but struck the girl, a GSP report stated.

Chloe’s family took her to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, Futch said.

Chloe was a Quest student and a member of the art club at Sallie Z. She enjoyed playing soccer and softball, riding horses and playing with her cousins and her cat, Mr. Fluffy Buns, according to her obituary.

“Chloe had her own unique personality, marched to the beat of her own drum and always had a gift of making others laugh,” her obituary reads. “She always wanted to grow up to be a clown, but later changed it to a marine biologist, and we are quite sure she would’ve been both. Our little Boo Boo has gone to heaven, and we are sure that wherever she gathers with the other angels, she will always make them laugh.”

Anyone who donates using a check should make it payable to “Iron Order Backwoods.” The Iron Order Motorcycle Club is a not-for-profit club, and all funds collected will be given to the family for the purchase of a headstone.
