Inside Bulloch Business with Jan Moore - Disney World awaiting Ricky Nessmith

This coming Friday, Farmers and Merchants Bank will host a reception for Ricky Nessmith, who is retiring from day-to-day operations of the bank at the end of this year. Nessmith is an experienced banker whose career in the field of banking and finance has spanned more than 44 years.

Nessmith announced his intent to retire, which led the bank on a search for a new president and CEO. Brett Morgan was hired last spring, and Nessmith has remained with the bank during the transition period serving as the bank's chief operating officer, vice-chairman of the Board of Directors, and president of FMB Equibanc Inc., the holding company of the bank.

"I am really going to miss the employees of the bank and our customers, just people in general," he said. "I said I wanted to retire when I turned 66, and that is what I am going to do. I will miss it, however."

Nessmith served as a director and executive vice president of the bank from 1995 until 2002, when he was named president and CEO. He will continue to serve on the board of the FMB Equibanc and the Farmers and Merchants Bank board of directors.

Nessmith said he is very proud to have worked for three different banks in Bulloch County, allowing him to spend his entire career here.

"I moved each time because they were getting bigger and becoming more of a regional bank," he said. "I really wanted to spend my career working in a community bank, and I have been able to do that. Also, I have had three different sets of customers, and that has been gratifying as well."

I have had the pleasure of interviewing and getting to know Nessmith over the last several years. He is the type of individual who makes our community so special. He is dedicated to his profession, public service, his family and his community. And further, he is very proud of Statesboro, and it shows. He is an all-around good guy.

Nessmith is a former chairman of the Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce, former chairman of the Bulloch County Zoning Commission, a member of the Ogeechee Technical College Foundation board, a member of the Statesboro Rotary Club and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro. He served in the Georgia Army National Guard, retiring after 35 years with the rank of colonel.

While I know that Nessmith is very excited about retiring and spending more time with his family, particularly his two grandchildren, he will be missed. I would encourage you to go to his retirement reception, which is being held this Friday, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the main branch of the bank on North Main Street.

I did ask Nessmith what was the first thing he was going to do when he retired. His reply: "I'm going to Disney World." And, he really is.

So, until next Tuesday, I bid you au revoir.
