A special sendoff will be held for Statesboro mayor Joe Brannen Tuesday to celebrate his many years of service to the city.
The city will host an open reception to honor the longtime city councilman and one-term mayor at The Hall by 40 East Grill, located behind 40 East on East Vine Street.
The reception is scheduled from 5-7 p.m.
Brannen, 74, was first elected to public office in Statesboro in 1998; he has lived in Statesboro for 47 years — after moving from Portal.
A charter member of the Bulloch Lions Club, where he served as president for several terms, and a current member of the Downtown Statesboro Rotary Club, Brannen will relinquish the mayor’s office at the end of the month.
The outgoing mayor has consistently expressed pride for the current state of city government, and the direction he feels the city is headed.
“Statesboro is a wonderful city. I feel that the city of Statesboro is in excellent condition. There is an excellent staff and employees that strive to make this city run smoothly for all its citizens,” he said. “The elected officials work together well and are concerned and committed to do the right thing for all citizens.”
In addition to the sendoff, City Council has called a special meeting Tuesday to provide the mayor one final assembly at City Hall.
Council’s only scheduled meeting of December was held last week at Statesboro High School.
Both the meeting, scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Council Chambers, and reception will be open to the public.
