Inside Bulloch Business with Jan Moore - Buy a 'Paul's Angel' and help battle cancer

One of my favorite local charitable fundraisers is spearheaded by Statesboro artist Beth Sands. Sands is the owner of Barefoot Angel Designs, and her Christmas tree ornament fundraiser is affectionately known in and around Statesboro as Paul's Angel.
"My mother-in-law, Paulette Neal, was affectionately known as 'Paul,' and she taught us to give without hesitation, celebrate everything and love without condition," Sands said. "I created Paul's Angel in February 2005 in support of her fight against stage four lung cancer."
"Today, our small family project has grown into an annual fund raising effort. Each angel is laser cut from metal, and primed by Southern Metal Craft which is owned by my brother Greg Williams. He donates the angels for us to decorate, and hundreds of people volunteer their time to decorate them. Each year, I am inspired to design a unique angel."
Sands said the angels are $10 and are sold locally in six locations: Anderson's General Store, Colonial House of Flowers, Doodle Bugs, Smith Jewelers, Southern Pharmacy and K. Whitehall. Aside from the fact that the angel ornaments are literally created with love by so many, 100 percent of the sales proceeds of the ornaments goes directly to the Statesboro Bulloch County Breast Cancer Foundation.
"Last year, we sold approximately 400 ornaments," she said. "I am hoping to top 500 this year. It is so much fun to watch folks enjoy themselves while creating their own unique angel for sale. Some of them are truly stunning, and all are wonderful and fun."
Sands said her mother-in-law passed away in September 2005.
"I believe there is a little bit of Paul in every angel, bringing peace, love and hope to all those who create and share each one," she said. "My family is grateful to all of those who help support our family project."
I feel that Sands is a hero in our community, and this is a wonderful charitable endeavor. I have painted an angel myself just recently, and although mine was, shall we say, not as good as some of the others, I had a great time and could see how much being involved with Paul's Angel meant to those that were there donating their time and artistic talents.
I hope that our community will again support this wonderful fundraiser.
Sands said if you have any questions about Paul's Angel, call her at (912) 481-3862.
So, until next Tuesday, I bid you au revoir.
