Crash closes roads

Roads were closed for hours early Wednesday morning after a driver fell asleep and crashed, according to police. The accident caused a power outage, which led an officer to investigate.

After noticing the power outage around 1:30 a.m, Statesboro Police Officer Casey Tomlinson began searching the area of North Zetterower Avenue and Hwy. 301 North, according to police reports.

He discovered a white 2009 Honda Accord that had wrecked and learned from speaking to the driver, Daniel Allen Eden, 17, Rolling Woods Way, Eden had fallen asleep.

Eden, who had been traveling westbound on East Parrish Street (which turns into Hwy. 301 at the Statesboro city limits boundary) told Tomlinson he awakened when his vehicle crashed into a power pole, then struck a tree.

Eden said he suffered head and neck injuries, but refused EMS transport to the hospital, according to reports.

Eden was charged with failure to maintain lane and violation of a Class D driver’s license, reports stated.

After the crash, portions of Hwy. 301 North and Zetterower Avenue, located near the scene of the crash, were closed so repairs could be made, according to a City of Statesboro street department spokesperson. The roads were reopened a few hours later.
