Georgia Southern University’s Theatre and Performance Program will present Pearl Cleage’s “Flyin’ West” starting today.

The play will run through Nov. 20 at the Center for Art and Theatre’s Black Box Theatre, 233 Pittman Drive. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee performance on at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Set in 1898 outside the all-black town of Nicodemus, Kan., “Flyin’ West” examines the lives, memories and hopes of four women — two former slaves and two free women — seeking a better life. But even in Kansas — and away from the uncertainties of the post-Civil War South — the women find that their new surroundings are not free of danger and unexpected twists.

The play features the return of director and Georgia Southern Professor Emeritus Mical Whitaker. He was inducted into the Georgia Theatre Conference Hall of Fame on Oct. 12 for his work as an educator, performer and director in Georgia and across the United States. Although he has retired from Georgia Southern, Whitaker is the director of the Youth Theatre program at the Averitt Center of the Arts and is a frequent guest lecturer and director with the Theatre and Performance Program.

Student and youth tickets are $5. Faculty, staff and community tickets are $10. All seating is general admission. Doors opens at 7 p.m., and audience members are encouraged to arrive no later than 7:15 p.m. to ensure good seats. For reservations or tickets, contact the box office at (912) 478-5379. It is open from 3-5 p.m. before performances and at 6 p.m. on performance days. Productions by Theatre and Performance are made possible by funding from student activities fees.

Cast members for “Flyin’ West” include Araba DeGraft, Marissa Casey, Khadijah Carter, Matessia Murray, J.J. Lamay and Leonard Morrow III, with scenic design by Patrick Galletta, costume design by Sarah McCarroll and lighting and sound design by Kelly Berry.
