Appling tops SEB, clinches Region 1-AAA title

    BAXLEY — The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets traveled to Baxley to face the Appling County Pirates on Friday, with a potential region title on the line. The Yellow Jackets fell short 42-21 and finish third in the final Region 1-AAA standings for 2013.
    With the win the Pirates (8-2, 7-0) finish the regular season as Region 1-AAA champions, followed by Pierce County (9-1, 6-1) as the No. 2 seed. Johnson, Savannah (4-6, 4-3) earned the fourth seed.
    The Pirates were the first to score on a 90-yard fumble recovery and return for a touchdown by Michael Byrd. Israel Jaramillo added the extra point to make the score 7-0 with 8:48 remaining in the first quarter.
    Southeast Bulloch (7-2-1, 5-2) tied the score on a 10-yard touchdown run by Tyler Epps. The extra point was converted to tie the score 7-7 at the 11:46 mark in the second quarter.
    The Pirates answered with a 30-yard touchdown run by Maurice Paulk to make the score 14-7 with 10:37 remaining until halftime.
Paulk added another touchdown run later in the quarter to increase the lead to 21-7.The Pirates scored for the third time in the second quarter to lead at the half, 28-7.
    Southeast Bulloch opened the second half scoring on a two-yard touchdown run by Epps to cut the Pirate lead to 28-14 at the 6:28 mark.
    The Pirates answered with a 30-yard touchdown run by Dasher making the score 35-14 with 4:42 remaining in the third quarter.
    The Pirates final score of the night came with 10:58 left in the fourth quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Derrix Henry to make the score 42-14.
    The Yellow Jackets were able to add a four-yard touchdown run by Epps to make the final score 42-21.
    Southeast Bulloch will await its playoff matchup and will open play in the first round of the GHSA Class AAA state playoffs on the road Friday against Jefferson County, the No. 2 seed from Region 3-AAA.
