Stilson Elementary’s water pump fails

Stilson Elementary School's well pump stopped working, leaving the school without water, at about 9:50 a.m. Friday, the Bulloch County school system said.

The district's Maintenance Department quickly brought a water truck to the campus so restroom facilities could still be operated. Later in the day, the Stilson Volunteer Fire Department supplied the campus with additional water. The school system also supplied bottled water for drinking, said Hayley G. Greene, the district's public relations and marketing specialist.

The lunchroom staff already had lunch prepared, so it did not affect the lunch schedule. Children still had the choice of a hot or cold lunch and of milk or juice to drink.

The Maintenance Department is working on repairing the water system and pump, and the district expects everything to be back to normal on Monday, Greene said.

The water outage did not affect classroom instruction, nor did it cause administrators to release school early. School buses followed their normal pickup and delivery times, Greene said.

Principal Pam Goodman made parents aware of the issue using the school's all-call electronic messaging system. The school has 359 students in grades pre-kindergarten through five.

Every district school has a crisis management plans for incidents such as these, allowing school staff them to address the issue while still meeting student needs and avoiding disruption of the school system's primary mission of educating children, Greene said.
