Local Roundup: GSU's Frye earns academic honor


    Georgia Southern offensive tackle Garrett Frye today was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Division I Football Academic All-District Football team. 
    As a member of the academic all-district first team, he advances to the national ballot for national Academic All-America team honors with voting to begin next week. 
    Selected by the by the College Sports Information Directors of America, the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America program recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
    An exercise science major, Frye possesses a 3.71 grade point average and is in his junior year both academically and as a member of the Georgia Southern Football team.

Monken radio show rescheduled
    The upcoming Inside Georgia Southern Football with Coach Monken radio show will air Thursday, Nov. 14, live from Locos Bar and Grill in Statesboro.
    The show normally airs on Monday's but has been moved to Thursday at 7 p.m., due to scheduling conflicts.

BA foursome earns postseason honors
    Four Bulloch Academy softball players received postseason honors recently.
    Senior first baseman Haley Mock and junior third baseman Ashley Burke were picked for the GISA Class AAA All-State softball team.
    Mock, Burke were also named to the Region 4-AAA All-Region team, along with senior pitcher Madelyn Vickery and junior left fielder Page Spence.

SHS, Portal hoops to scrimmage
    Bulloch County basketball fans can get themselves a sneak peak at the upcoming high school hoops season as Statesboro hosts Portal Saturday evening. The junior varsity squads will tip off at 6 p.m. with the varsity teams sche,duled to start around 7:30 p.m.
    Both schools have high hopes for the 2013-14 season as they both return most of their starters off of squads that made it all the wat to the Final Four of their respective classification’s state tournament last season.
    Statesboro gets its season started Nov. 15 at Windsor Forest while Portal travels to Montgomery County Dec. 3.
    Admission to Saturday’s scrimmage is $7.
