Local man arrested for aggravated assault on estranged wife

A man whom police said held his estranged wife against her will, bit her on the face and threatened to kill her is behind bars without bond, according to Bulloch County Jail officials.
Statesboro Police arrested Shafters Wilkerson, 23, North Foss Street, on charges of aggravated assault, burglary, false imprisonment, battery, criminal trespass and interference of an emergency call for assistance, said Statesboro Police Chief Stan York.
Advanced Patrol Officer J. Hancock responded to Varsity Lodge Apartments Monday regarding a domestic dispute, and spoke with a female victim who said "her estranged husband, Shafters Wilkerson, forced his way into her house an initiated a physical altercation with her," York said. She said "her husband punched the wall and bit her on the face. She further stated he locked her in a room against her will for several hours."
Wilkerson also "threatened to kill her several times and refused to let her call for help," he said.
Eventually, the victim was able to escape, running outside, and Wilkerson left, he said. After he left the area, the woman called 911.
Statesboro Det. K. Holloway responded to the scene as well and opened an investigation, York said. "He photographed the scene and collected evidence," then posted a lookout for Wilkerson.
Wilkerson turned himself in later to Det. Kelphie Lundy, York said.
He was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, booked on the multiple charges, and remained incarcerated without bond Thursday evening, according to jail records.
