Inside Bulloch Business with Jan Moore - School board puts old Sallie Z. up for sale

Jan Moore

I don't know about you, but I did a double take the other day when I rode down Gentilly Road and saw a for-sale sign on the fence bordering the now-closed Sallie Zetterower Elementary School.

It isn't very often that you see a for-sale sign on a public school. The property is being listed with local real estate broker Todd Manack, the owner of Manack Signature Properties. I called Manack to ask him the specifics about the property.

"It is eight acres surrounded by what we term 'mixed use,'" he said. "There is some residential and some surrounding commercial, which makes it a very interesting property. We have been approached by varied interests from residential development to commercial development to a combination use. There are very differing visions of what could go there."

Manack said the property is being listed for $1.645 million.

Bulloch County Schools Superintendent Charles Wilson said the school board would like to see a responsible buyer that will offer a fair market price for the property and use it in a way that enhances the value of the community.

"The school system's mission is education, so we'd like those that are more experienced in managing the sale of unused community assets to find a responsible buyer who will put the property back to the best use of the community," he said.

I grew up near Sallie Z. and went there to school. Both of our children went there as well, so it has sentimental value to me. But I also recognize that the structure itself has limited use by today's technology and safety standards, so I understand the desire to sell it. I am very hopeful, like Wilson, that this central location in the heart of the city can be put to a good and attractive use.

So, until next Tuesday, I bid you au revoir.
