DWS knocks off visiting Bulloch

Bulloch Academy quarterback Will Rush...

ALBANY — Deerfield-Windsor quarterbacks completed just three passes Friday night against Bulloch Academy.
But two went for long touchdowns and the third set up another score, as the Knights outmuscled the Gators 38-10 in GISA Region 1-AAA action.
In the opening quarter, senior Tripp Presley connected with Reid Wright for a 34-yard gainer down to the Bulloch Academy 1-yard line. Presley bulled his way in on the next play for the game’s opening score with 1:28 left in the quarter.
In the second quarter, with the Knights seemingly trapped at their own 16, senior fullback Grey Lanier snuck through the line, got behind the charging Bulloch secondary and caught a short lob from sophomore quarterback Tyler Lowe. He then outraced the Gators for an 84-yard score at the 3:19 mark.
The third pass came on the first play of the third quarter. Lanier again snuck through the line and slipped past the crashing BA linebackers. This time, Presley flipped the ball to him and Lanier sped 65 yards for his second touchdown of the night. The two long touchdown passes, along with an 80-yard fumble recovery by freshman Steven Williams in the fourth quarter, gave the Knights 21 quick points in an otherwise tough, hard-fought battle.
Bulloch (3-3, 0-1), held the powerhouse squad to just 139 yards rushing and forced five fumbles. In the opening quarter, BA held DWS to three-and-out on its first series and junior defensive tackle Dylan Stuckey stopped another drive by recovering a fumble at the 10-yard line.
The Gator offense started off strong, eating up the clock on a nine-play drive to open the game. But the quick DWS defense soon got the Gators’ number as they hammered junior quarterback Will Rushing almost every time he dropped back to pass.
Early in the second quarter, Bulloch’s defense forced a Knight punt. BA took over at its own 14-yard line. Rushing dropped to pass on the next play, but his throw was intercepted at the 20. Five plays later, senior Matthew Fox bulled in from 6 yards out for a 14-0 lead with 6:29 left in the half.
After the 84-yard catch-and-run made it 21-0, the Gators got a little good news when Rushing saw an opening on an option keeper, dashed up the middle and raced 44 yards to the DWS 28. Battling the clock, Bulloch drove to the Knight 6. After another Rushing sack back at the 15 with 32.2 seconds left, BA fullback Andrew Howell pushed the ball to the DWS 10. The BA field-goal team rushed onto the field and senior J.P. Padilla drilled a 26-yarder with 1.6 left for a 21-3 halftime score.
The 65-yard catch-and-run opened the third quarter as Deerfield pulled out to a 28-3 lead.
Bulloch had another defensive stand in the third and forced DWS to punt. But a fumble on the next play gave the ball back to the home team. Eight plays later, junior kicker Harry Vildibill nailed a 32-yard field goal for a 31-3 lead.
Another BA fumble, this one midway through the fourth, turned into an 80-yard touchdown for DWS freshman Steven Williams. The score grew to 38-3.
Howell, who led the Gators with 146 yards on 23 carries, worked hard in the second half and made some positive yards with his aggressive running style. He had Bulloch’s lone touchdown on the night, a 36-yarder with 3:25 left in the game.
