Wanted man captured after being Tasered

Text Size: Small Large Medium
A man wanted by law enforcement fled Wednesday when he saw a Bulloch County Sheriff's investigator, and was captured when another sheriff's official deployed a Taser.
Claude Wesley Hardy,22, Cypress Lake Mobile Home Park, refused orders to stop after fleeing from deputies and other officers, forcing Bulloch County Sheriff Sgt. Kenny Thompson to use his M-26 Taser, said Bulloch County Sheriff Chief Investigator Capt. Todd Hutchens.
Hutchens spotted Hardy at Mighty Mike's Hot Stop #111 on West Main Street late Wednesday morning, and pulled into the parking lot to speak to him. Hutchens knew Hardy was awaiting court procedures regarding Statesboro Police Department charges of burglary and theft by receiving stolen property, he said.
And "two weeks ago, (Bulloch County Sheriff's) Deputy Pre Cone issued more warrants for Hardy's arrest for theft by taking and t heft by receiving," he said.
But when Hutchens pulled into the parking lot, Hardy fled. "He knew who I was," Hutchens said.
He gave chase as Hardy fled east on West Main Street, turning left onto Walnut Street and then trying to hide in an alley, he said.
Statesboro Police officers and additional Bulloch County Sheriff's deputies also responded to assist, and when Thompson followed Hardy into the alley between Statesboro Carpet and Tile and the Statesboro Herald, he ordered Hardy to stop and turn himself in.
Hardy refused, so "Thompson tasered him and took him into custody," Hutchens said. "He did not follow verbal commands."
Hardy was charged with obstruction as well because of the fleeing incident, he said.
He was taken to the Bulloch County Jail where he remained Wednesday evening with a $5,000 bond, according to jail records.
