Local Roundup: SEB holds off Telfair


    McRAE — The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets (2-0-1) scored the game's first 21 points, and held off Telfair County (3-1) for a 35-26 win Friday on the road.
    Tyler Epps rushed for three touchdowns, and Antonio McMillan, who played in his first game since a preseason injury in August, added a score.
    An Isaiah Francois sack and a deflected pass on fourth down by Ryan McBride stopped the Trojans' momentum early in the first quarter with the Jackets leading 7-0.
    Cole Carter followed up Telfair's turnover on downs with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Matthew McBride.
    Keagan Carter intercepted a Telfair pass in the third quarter.
    Telfair scored 18 unanswered points in the third quarter to cut the SEB lead to 28-18, but Epps scored for the third time with 2:18 remaining in the game to help ice the victory.
    Telfair missed on three of its first four two-point-conversion attempts, and connected on the fourth for the game's final margin.
    Southeast Bulloch opens Region 1-AAA play on Friday at home against Johnson.

Screven rolls past Windsor Forest
    SYLVANIA — The Screven County Gamecocks (2-2) were nearly unstoppable in a 42-14 win Friday over visitint Windsor Forest.
    Jimmie Robinson (11 carries, 48 yards) scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground and Travarious Johnson (9-94) added another rushing touchdown.
    Quarterbacks Rashad Hughley and Chandler Rigdon, making his first appearance for Screven (2-2) combined to complete 12 of 20 passes for 174 yards. Hughley threw a touchdown pass to Brian Alexander (4 catches, 47 yards) and Rigdon connected with Desmond White (2-31, TD) for a score.
    Dante Wilburn (3 catches, 55 yards) recorded an interception which he returned 70 yards for a score.
    Screven trailed early, as a bad snap on the game's first play gave Windsor the ball on the SCHS 7-yard line, allowing them an easy score and an early, 7-0 lead.
    The Gamecocks open Region 3-AA play on Friday on the road at Harlem.

Gators nipped by St. Mary’s
    Fumbles, dropped passes and missed blocking assignments led to a 13-0 loss to St. Mary’s Catholic School in middle-school football action Thursday.
    Still, there were some bright spots for the home-standing Gators.
    Quarterback Don Aaron completed three passes for 52 yards to wide receiver Wright Rockett. Trevor Mason paced the rushing offense with 44 rushing yards on 11 carries. 
    Seth Conner led the defense with seven and a half tackles and a forced fumble while both Brandon Merrill and Justin Kane had five tackles each.
    BA hosts Edmund Burke Academy next Thursday at 6 p.m.

BA blasts Gatewood
    EATONTON – Bulloch Academy collected 13 hits as the Lady Gators ripped region foe Gatewood 12-2 Thursday.
    Both senior Ashlee Lanier and junior Kristin Kingery went 2-for-3 to lead the BA offense. Senior Haley Mock and sophomore Kendra Houghton were 2-for-4 and junior Ashley Burke was 2-for-5. Houghton blasted two doubles and Mock had one extra-base hit.
    Bulloch (6-4, 5-4) scored three runs in the third, three in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the seventh.
    Senior Madelyn Vickery pitched six innings for the win, facing 25 batters, giving up five hits and walking just three.
    The Lady Gators travel to Macon today for a doubleheader against Tattnall Square Academy and are back home Tuesday against Westfield.

SHS volleyball sweeps
Statesboro's junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams won their matches Thursday  at Toombs county. The JV Blue Devils won 25-10, 25-17.
    Rebecca Welch lead the way with four aces. Maggie Davis had three digs and Grace Hannah Cason, Jordan Collins, and Cameron Parker had one kill each.
The varsity Devils won 25-19, 25-14.
    Leading the way was setter Maggie Ray with five assists. Outside Tess Newton had five kills and one ace. Katie  Wison had four aces with two assists. Middle blocker Tori Tindal had two kills and two  blocks, and middle Rachel Hastings one block and one kill in the win.

Eagles fall to Radford
    ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Georgia Southern men’s soccer dropped a 2-1 result to Radford in the opening match of the 2013 Asheville Invitational.
    GSU conceded a goal early, but tied the match just after the halftime break. Radford, however, added a 69th minute goal to take the victory.
    The Eagles are back in action on Sunday afternoon against UNC Asheville

Lord, Holm pace GSU at XC meet
    HAMPTON — Freshman Ashton Lord and sophomore Peyton Holm finished one-two for Georgia Southern Cross Country for the second straight meet.
    Both Lord and Holm had top 50 individual finishes while the Eagles placed seventh overall at the 38th GSU Invitational at Nash Farm Battlefield Park.
