A second contender emerged Wednesday in the race to represent District 1 on Statesboro City Council.
Kelly Dabbs, the owner of Southern Aquatics Services, a pond/water-habitat management company in Statesboro,
submitted all pertinent paperwork and qualifying fees at City Hall and will be placed on the ballot for a November city election.
Dabbs, 47, is a Statesboro native and will seek public office for the first time.
He will oppose incumbent City Councilman Phil Boyum for the District 1 office.
The seats for Districts 1 and 4 office, as well as the mayor, will be up for election in November.
The qualifying period for all three positions runs through Friday — at City Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day through Thursday, then ending at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
As of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, qualified candidates were: Boyum, Dabbs, John Riggs (District 4) and Jan Moore (mayor).
Residents interested in running for office may submit materials for qualification to City Clerk Sue Starling.
According to Starling, to qualify for the mayoral race, residents must be at least 30 years old, registered to vote, and have lived in Statesboro for at least one year. The fee to qualify for mayor is $560.
To qualify for council, residents must be at least 25 years old, registered to vote, and have lived in their district for at least six months.
The fee to qualify as for council is $227.
