Local Roundup: Portal scrimmages Wheeler

PORTAL — The Portal Panthers were rained out of its scheduled preseason scrimmage against Twiggs County last Friday night. Eager to get some head-to-head action in before the season starts, the Panthers waited out another afternoon thunderstorm before taking on Wheeler County in a controlled scrimmage Wednesday night in Portal.
“It was huge for us to get this experience,” Portal coach David NeSmith said. “We’ve been working hard, but there’s only so much you can do when you’re hitting bags or one of your teammates.”
Coming off of a 1-9 year in which they struggled to field a full, healthy team at times, the biggest takeaway from Wednesday was a solid live-action scrimmage that left all of the Panthers in good shape.
Evan Street looked to be in command of an offense that he head up for the third year and Casey Jones lived up to his billing as a dependable running back. More conditioning is needed, but NeSmith likes the direction his team is headed.
A full recap of Wednesday’s scrimmage will be in Friday’s Statesboro Herald.
