16 teams come to Statesboro for softball tourney

They’ll be plenty of softball this weekend for softball enthusiasts, as 16 teams from around the state arrive in Statesboro today for the 2007 Battle in the ‘Boro Softball Tournament at Mill Creek.
Two Bulloch County squads, Southeast Bulloch and host Statesboro look for a valuable weekend of experience.
“We’re looking to get a win,” said SHS coach Karry Parker, whose Devils have started out 0-3. “We’ve got some good teams coming in — a lot of different teams that we haven’t seen in the past. It’s also a good way to gain some experience by watching when we’re not playing. But we’re definitely looking for a win this weekend.”
Play will be divided into four groups with pool play today and Saturday. The teams will then be re-divided based on standings and will play a four team elimination tournament each with a championship and consolation game.
Schools from the Savannah area (Groves, Savannah Christian and Effingham County), southwest Georgia (Colquit County, Valdosta) and metro-Atlanta (Ola, Heritage) will all participate this weekend.
“We’ll have an opportunity to put some kids in some different places,” said Parker. “Five games in one weekend — they’ve got to get a little variety of everything if they can.”
Meghan Cassedy will see some time at pitcher this weekend, giving No.1 starter Brittany Raines some rest. Erin Hice will get to try her hand at catching.
The Yellow Jackets of SEB enter the tournament at 2-0, coming off a big region win at Metter on Thursday.
“We want to get some good experience playing against experienced teams,” said SEB coach Aimee Civalier about the tournament. “We’re going to be trying some different things out here and there. We’ll be playing to win ball games so it will give us some opportunities to experiment in some different spots.
Statesboro opens play at 3 p.m. against East Laurens while SEB hits the field at 5:15 p.m. against Wayne County.
Admission is $6 for a daily pass with 16 games today and 24 on Saturday.
