Who stole the fork in the road?

Unless you’re the Jolly Green Giant, why would anyone need a 7-foot tall, 150-pound steel fork?

That’s what Glenn De Vecchis wants to know.

For about two years, he has marked his business location, at the fork of West Main and Johnson streets, with the gigantic fork, telling customers seeking JEJ Tax Specialists and Westside Gold and Pawn to “look for the fork in the road.”

But Monday, the fork was missing and De Vecchis reported it stolen.

Whoever took the fork didn’t just grab it and run, he said.

The solid steel fork, created by his friend Lester Clark, was secured with screws into a concrete pad, topped by a bolted-on metal plate. Taking it was no easy feat, he said.

“I don’t know if they stole it for scrap or to put it in an apartment” as a conversation piece, he said. “I have no idea who stole it.”

The unique ornament has sentimental value more than anything, he said, acknowledging that anyone who tries to sell it for scrap would likely draw attention for having such an unusual piece.

“I wish I could just get it back,” he said.

He is offering a $100 reward for its return. Anyone with information can contact him at (912) 489-3618 or Statesboro police at (912) 764-9911.
