A United States Marine was charged Sunday with aggravated assault after he fired shots at a man, then beat him, police said.
Victim Matthew Christopher Wade suffered injuries requiring treatment at East Georgia Regional Medical Center after being beaten by Byron Charles Russell, 22, Duluth (stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC) and Keaton Hersman Russell, 22, Robin Hood Trail, said Statesboro Police Chief Stan York.
The original cause of the altercation was unclear, but the disagreement was "fueled by alcohol," said Det. Terry Briley, who investigated the incident.
Cpl. Benjamin Purvis and Sgt. Charles Forney responded Sunday to a Robin Hood Trail residence, where Wade told them two men he knew, "Byron Russell and Keaton Russell," became involved in a verbal altercation that quickly turned physical, York said.
"Byron Russell produced a handgun and fired it in the direction of Mr. Wade," he said. "Wade was not injured by the gun shots. However, he received extensive injuries when he was beaten by Mr. Byron Russell and Mr. Keaton Russell."
Briley and Det. Ken Scott arrived at the scene and collected evidence and witness statements, which led to the arrests of both suspects, he said.
Byron Russell was charged with aggravated assault, discharging a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, reckless conduct and battery.
Keaton Russell was charged with battery, and a third man involved - Andrew R. Richards, 26, was charged with obstruction after "while in an intoxicated condition, (he) continued to interfere with officers and EMS personnel in the performance of their duties," York said.
All three men arrested were taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where they later posted bond, according to jail records.
