SYLVANIA — Southeast Bulloch picked up its first win of the softball season, taking down old rival Screven County by a count of 11-2 Monday evening.
Kayla Perkins and Blair Chapman combined to pitch effectively for the Lady Yellow Jackets (1-1) while Ciera Clark went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and 3 RBI to pace the offensive effort.
“We played a really solid game,” SEB coach Aimee Civalier. “We got some good pitching and had a few big hits with runners on base.”
Storm Williams reached base for the Jackets via a one-out error in the first inning. Clark followed up by blasting an offering from Lady Gamecocks starter Taryn Burns over the wall in left field for a 2-0 lead.
Two walks and a hit batter by Perkins loaded the bases for Screven in the bottom half of the first.
The Gamecocks plated a run on an RBI groundout, but the Jackets limited the damage and escaped with a 2-1 lead.
“It was big to get out of that early trouble,” Civalier said. “I think that we calmed down a little after that. We got focused and kept extending the lead.”
Perkins walked and worked her way around to score on two errors in the third to make it a 3-1 SEB advantage.
Clark added an RBI single in the fourth and Mary Grace Manahan broke the game open with a two-run single.
Chapman relieved Perkins in the bottom of the fourth and cruised the rest of the way.
Screven put at least one runner on base in all but one inning, but consistent pitching and some stellar defense kept the Gamecocks from getting back into contention.
SEB put things out of reach with five runs in the seventh – highlighted by a line drive, two-run home run by Manahan. After Manahan’s blast, the Jackets loaded up the bases, then proceeded to clear them on a three-run double by Dallas McClellan.
The Jackets look to make it two straight wins this afternoon as they travel to Tattnall County. The junior varsity plays at 4 p.m. with the varsity scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.
