Wolfes in hunt at U.S. Amateur

BROOKLINE, Mass. —Georgia Southern junior Scott Wolfes shot a 2-over par 72 on the Charles River Country Club course and is tied for 58th after the first round of the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship, the oldest golf championship in the country.
Wolfes is tied with 27 other players, and the top 64 competitors from the field of 312 advance to match play on Wednesday.
Wolfes began the day on hole 10 and posted par on his first seven holes. He slipped a little at the turn, bogeying holes 17 and 18 but birdied holes 2 and 6 to get back to even. A pair of bogey 5s on holes 7 and 8 and a par on hole 9 gave him a 72 for the round.
“I played solid today, hit 12 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens, so I can’t complain,” said Wolfes. “I just need to make a few more putts. I think if I play the same way I did today in tomorrow’s round, I’ll have a good chance to make it to match play.”
He will tee off hole 1 on The Country Club Course today at 2 p.m.
On the line for the winner of the U.S. Amateur is an exemption from local and sectional qualifying for the next U.S. Open, an exemption from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Amateurs, an exemption from qualifying for the next British Open Championship and a likely invitation to the next Masters Tournament.
