Two people were arrested after officers were called to the theft of a vehicle in progress early Tuesday, and it led them on a brief chase, Statesboro police said.

At 1:50 a.m., an employee of Pope Construction called 911 and reported that his pickup truck had just been stolen from the business property, Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner said in a news release issued Tuesday.

Officers immediately responded to the area and saw the pickup truck traveling away from the scene. When officers tried to stop the vehicle, it quickly pulled away and into the parking lot of Tillman, Brannen and Minick on Northside Drive East. The suspects then got out of the vehicle and ran away in different directions, Turner said.

Advanced Patrol Officers Jason Borne and Jared Shababy pursued and arrested one of the suspects, Davius Shaquell Holly, 21, of Denmark Street. Officer Louis Parker then located the other suspect, Esclario Jamaal Holly, 22, of Denmark Street, and placed him under arrest with the assistance of Sgt. Randall Powell, Turner said.

Both offenders were transported to the Bulloch County Jail where they await further court action. Each was charged with felony theft by taking of motor vehicle, felony theft by taking, felony second-degree burglary and obstruction.

The front porch area of Tillman, Brannen, and Minick received slight damage when the pickup truck rolled into it after the offenders got out of the vehicle, Turner said.
