OAKVILLE, Ontario — Tournament leader Hunter Mahan withdrew from the RBC Canadian Open on Saturday after his wife went into labor.
The 31-year-old American was at 13 under after 36 holes and had yet to tee off in the third round.
"I received exciting news a short time ago that my wife Kandi has gone into labor with our first child," Mahan said in a statement. "Kandi and I are thrilled about the addition to the Mahan family and we look forward to returning to the RBC Canadian Open in the coming years."
Dustin Johnson shot 63 in rainy conditions on Saturday and also sits at 11 under after 54 holes.
Brandt Snedeker grabbed the top spot a few hours after Mahan withdrew.
Snedeker had a 9-under 63 at Glen Abbey to take the lead after the rain-delayed third round. There were scattered showers and an 80-minute delay because of lightning.
Sweden's David Lingmerth was a stroke back after a 65, and Matt Kuchar and Jason Bohn were 12 under. Kuchar had a 64, and Bohn shot 66. Dustin Johnson also shot 63, good for a tie for fifth at 11 under with John Merrick (72), Greg Owen (67), Charley Hoffman (67) and Kyle Stanley (66).
Merrick, two strokes behind Mahan on Friday after a matching the course record with a second-round 62, played alone in the third round after Mahan withdrew. Merrick declined to playoff alongside a non-scoring marker.
David Hearn was the top Canadian, shooting a 68 to reach 5 under. Mike Weir was 3 under after a 73.
Mahan charged into the lead Friday with an 8-under 64 to improve on his 67 from the first round.
Mahan's start time had initially been set for 1:30 p.m. ET on Saturday before play was suspended for 80 minutes because of the threat of lightning in the area.
