The Averitt Center for the Arts has one last summer offering before school begins for most children next week.
This weekend, the Statesboro Youth Theater will present three performances of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “The King and I.” The performance will take the audience on a journey through the beautiful country of Siam (modern-day Thailand) while following the story of a brave woman named Anna.
Anna, played by Statesboro’s own Nora Franklin, dreams of becoming a schoolteacher and wants desperately to enrich the minds of young children. When the opportunity arises to teach a king’s children in a country far away, she packs up her life and her son, and they set off to a new life in pursuit of her dreams. However, when she arrives at her new home, Anna finds that living her dreams will come with hard work and she must decide if she can prove to both herself and the bull-headed king — played by JJ Crawford — that she will succeed.
This musical presents the audience with a portrayal of clashing cultures and, in the end, a timeless message of following your dreams and never giving up. Directed by Mical Whitaker, this high-energy musical entertains with songs that include “Getting to Know You” and “Shall We Dance.”
Will Anna persevere through the most difficult situation of her life, or will she give up her dream of being a teacher and leave the children of Siam she has grown to love so much?
The performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Emma Kelly Theater.
Tickets are $18 for adults and $10 for youths 12 and younger and can be purchased online or at the Emma Kelly Box office daily from noon to 5:30 p.m. For more information, contact the Averitt Center for the Arts at (912) 212-2787 or go online at www.averittcenterforthearts.org.
The show is sponsored by McCook’s Pharmacy and East Georgia Foot and Ankle Center.
