Statesboro police can't stress enough the importance of vehicles being locked.

Since Friday, officers responded to nine entering auto incidents, and most of the vehicles entered were left unlocked, said Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner.

Either "the victim's vehicles were left unlocked or there are no signs of forced entry into the vehicles," he said. "Most of these incidents are occurring in residential neighborhoods."

Statesboro police issued a Nixle alert over the weekend warning of several entering auto cases in the Cromartie Drive area.

"In most of these cases, money such as change in cup holders and other miscellaneous items such as MP3 players and GPS devices are being stolen," Turner said. "Other incidents have occurred in apartment complexes and parking lots of businesses."

According to reports, officers respond to entering auto incidents several times weekly.

"The Statesboro Police Department is encouraging citizens to make sure that their vehicles are locked when left unattended and not to leave valuable items or currency, even if its change lying in plain view," Turner said.

The entering auto cases are under investigation. Anyone with information concerning these incidents is asked to contact the Criminal Investigative Bureau of Statesboro Police Department at (912) 764-9911.
