A man who reported seeing a suspicious person rattling someone's doorknob was himself arrested Wednesday on charges of burglary and entering auto.

Charles A. Nash, 19, of Cherie Glen Road in Snellville, was also charged with loitering and prowling and possession of a schedule IV narcotic, Statesboro Public safety Director Wendell Turner said in a news release issued Thursday morning.

Around 7:18 a.m. Wednesday, Statesboro police responded to a call at The Cove at Southern apartments near the Georgia Southern University campus, where complainants reported a burglary and entering auto incident.

"During the investigation, the offender, Charles Nash, approached Advanced Patrol Officer Thomas McKeithen and reported suspicious activity," where he claimed to have seen someone trying an apartment door, Turner said. "While still on scene, another entering auto victim was located who then identified Nash as the subject that he saw in his vehicle."

After finding evidence through further investigation, McKeithen arrested Nash, Turner said.

Statesboro police reports list at least three related incidents involving Nash. The burglary victim reported Marlboro cigarettes, financial transaction cards, an Xbox 360, a duffel bag with more than $300 in pet supplies, an iPod, a ring and earrings missing. The jewelry was fond in Nash's pocket, according to reports.

Other items were found stashed in bushes nearby, reports state. Two others reported car radios taken from their vehicles.

Also found in Nash's pants pocket were "three whole Xanax (pills), four Xanax half pieces and three quarter pieces," reports state.

"If any citizen has a reason to believe that any of the recovered property belongs to them they are encouraged to contact the Statesboro Police Department Investigations Bureau," Turner said.
