Warden: Correctional Institute inmate caused disturbance

Elmer Bryan Mathews

A Bulloch County Correctional Institute inmate caused a disturbance Saturday that will extend his time in confinement, Warden Chris Hill said.

Around 9 p.m. Saturday, when an officer tried to conduct a routine head count, inmate Elmer Bryan Mathews, 18, of Lakeside Drive in Dacula, "disrupted" the count by "moving from side to side" in the room, which caused an incorrect count, he said.

When the officer called for help to escort Mathews to isolation as punishment for his disobedience, he became "hostile and threw a tantrum," resisting officers' efforts to remove him from the area. A struggle ensued, and officers had to physically restrain Mathews, Hill said.

Already incarcerated for conviction of felony theft by taking and robbery by intimidation, crimes which Hill said occurred in Forsyth County, Mathews now faces additional charges of terroristic threats, simple battery, two counts of obstruction of officers and a count of battery against a law enforcement officer, Hill said.

No one was injured during the struggle, according to Hill.

Mathews was transferred to Georgia State Prison after the incident.
