Police: Man steals $30 toy at knifepoint

A man who stole a remote controlled car at knife point didn't even get to play with the toy before being arrested, sheriff's officials said.

Calvin Latrell Jones, 31, High Street, Metter, was an uninvited guest at a party on Old Dill Road, and "was being a nuisance and was very intoxicated," said Bulloch County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Gene McDaniel.

Deputies responded to the Portal-area party around 4 a.m. Sunday and spoke with Lyons resident Luis Diaz, who told them he had been a guest at the party and was robbed at knife point, said Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson.

Diaz told investigators "while sitting in his car, an unknown (man) got into the car with him," Anderson said. "The (man) drew a knife and held it to Diaz's side. Diaz had a bag in the back seat that contained a radio controlled car."

The man, later identified as Jones, "told Diaz he was taking the bag," he said. Jones then "got out of Diaz's car, got on his bicycle, and left with the bag."

McDaniel said he did not believe Jones knew what was in the bag when he took it.

It wasn't long before deputies gathered enough information to identify Jones and learn where he lived, Anderson said. They located him, took him into custody and recovered the toy car.

Jones was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, entering auto, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime and public intoxication. He is being held in the Bulloch County Jail without bond, McDaniel said.

Jones served two years and 10 months of a four-year sentence in the Savannah Men's Transition Center for an August, 2001 burglary in Bulloch County, according to the Georgia Department of corrections Internet web site www.dcor.state.ga.us
