SNAP brings soccer camp to Mill Creek

This spring brought about another solid season for many of the area high school soccer programs. It will be nine long months before any of these teams plays another game, but a pair of talented trainers and coaches are looking to make this summer a productive one for players in the area as SNAP Fitness begins a soccer performance camp.
The sessions will be held at Mill Creek Regional Park on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the summer. The program is for kids aged 10-18 and focuses on building the strength and fitness necessary to play soccer at a high level.
Sessions can be reserved on an individual basis and will feature strength and endurance training as well as some skills training.
“We want to help kids who want to improve and possibly work towards playing in college,” program coordinator Tom Hemmings said. “It’s a demanding sport and you have to be in peak condition to play it well.”
Hemmings and fellow program coordinator Ciaran Fairman have spent much of their lives playing soccer at its most competitive levels. During his collegiate career, Hemmings captained Chattanooga to a Southern Conference title and an appearance in the NCAA tournament. Fairman played for Kentucky Wesleyan before transferring to Statesboro and appearing in several games for Georgia Southern. Both also played at the semi-pro level — Hemmings in England and Fairman in Ireland.
Since retiring from competition, both have taken to coaching up younger players. Hemmings has five years of soccer-specific conditioning programs for high school and college players. Fairman has six years of on-field training experience — also at the high school and collegiate level.
Hemmings and Fairman will leave most of the Xs and Os to other coaches, instead using the camp to ensure that their students are in the right condition to play their best game.
With their knowledge of soccer and expertise in fitness — both are currently pursuing Master’s degrees in exercise science at Georgia Southern — the pair are confident in their ability to take players to the next level in fitness and performance.
“A big part of our training is balance,” Hemmings said. “Whether it’s playing or training, you see a lot of people who are doing things improperly or are focusing too much on just one skill or exercise.
“If you want to be a well-balanced player, you have to have well-balanced training. That’s what we’re here to do.”
While travel teams based out of Mill Creek are making a name for themselves in statewide competition, this program looks to serve as an added benefit for local players wishing to play their club soccer out of Statesboro. Larger clubs in Savannah and Augusta have plenty of history and success, but the SNAP performance camp will now offer the same high-level training that Bulloch area players have had to wander out of town for in the past.
The SNAP Fitness camp aims to help participants pursue a career playing soccer, but also wants to promote healthy living in general. Hemmings and Fairman want to see their clients succeed on the field, but the ultimate goal is for living a healthy life.
“In dealing with boys and girls that are in middle school or high school, you have a bunch of kids that are going off to college soon,” Hemmings said. “If you’re playing on a team in college, you’ve got the training that comes with it. But if not, it’s easy to eat fast food and drink and give up on that training.
“We want to prepare everyone to play their best, but we also want them to learn good habits that they can keep forever.”
