Lightning burns Stilson home

Lightning struck a Stilson-area home Sunday afternoon, causing a fire that destroyed the two-story structure.

No one was injured, and firefighters were able to help the family save most of its clothing and jewelry, plus some firearms, Bulloch County Fire Chief Christopher Ivey said Monday.

The two-story home was on U.S. Highway 80 East near Georgia Highway 119.

Around 4 p.m. Sunday, a "lighting storm" passed through the area and the homeowner, who was at home with his family, heard a bolt strike the home, Ivey said.

"He walked outside and noticed his roof was on fire," Ivey said.

The man called 911 and within eight minutes, volunteer firefighters from Bulloch County Fire Station 6 in Stilson were on the scene.

Firefighters from five other county stations also responded, but upon arrival "there were heavy flames from the roof," and parts of the roof were already caving in on the second floor, he said. "We had to fight the fire from the outside."

Despite being able to save some belongings, the house is a "total loss," he said, adding that the American Red Cross Bulloch County chapter responded and is assisting the family.

Ivey said 28 volunteer firefighters responded to the scene of the fire.
