CHARLESTON, S.C. — The College of Charleston Cougars erased a solid outing from Josh Stevenson with a four-run sixth inning and swept the series with a 8-6 win on Saturday afternoon.
Georgia Southern (25-30, 13-17 SoCon) held a 4-1 lead going into the sixth inning. College of Charleston sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and scored four runs off of three hits. Josh Stevenson allowed the first two batters to reach base before a sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position. Alex Pastorious drove in the first two runs with a pinch hit single before Blake Butler plated the final two runs with a single.
The four-run inning handed reliever Derrick Smith (1-0) his first win of the season. Smith allowed one run over two innings and struck out a batter. Jason Richman (4-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs to score. Richman did not record an out in the sixth inning and allowed one hit.
Both starters received a no decision. Stevenson allowed three runs over 5.1 innings and struck out six batters. The senior righthander took advantage of the Eagles early lead and held the Cougars to one run over the first five innings. Matt Pegler was hit by a ball off the bat of Stryker Brown and was forced to leave the game after throwing two scoreless innings.
GSU, who was held hitless by Pegler, recorded their first hit in the third inning and scored two runs off of reliever Nathan Helvey. Tyler Avera led off the frame with a single and scored from second base on a Brent Pugh base hit into left. Pugh later scored on a Ben Morgan single to center.
The Cougars got a run back in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run by Carl Wise. The long ball was the first of two on the day for Wise and the second of three in the series. Stevenson struck out Cody Martin to end the inning and leave two runners stranded.
The Eagles got the run back in the top of the fourth inning. Robbie Dodds reached to lead off the inning  after Devon Reed's throw sailed high of the bag at first base. He later scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Avera.
GSU added another run and led 4-1 after the fifth inning. Morgan scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning after reaching base on a hit by pitch.
College of Charleston extended their lead to 8-4 with three runs in the eighth inning. Ben Boyken drove in a lead off single from Tyler Jackson before Wise hit his eighth homer of the season. Wise drove in two runs with a long ball over the fence in left field.
Morgan cut the lead to two runs in the ninth inning with a two-run homer of his own.         Georgia Southern will make its way to the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament in Greenville, S.C. Wednesday. The Eagles enter the field as the No. 7 seed.
