First Friday spotlights fine arts

Students will get the chance to demonstrate their fine arts skills at this month’s First Friday event in downtown Statesboro.
The Downtown Statesboro Development Authority’s May First Friday features performing groups from Statesboro High and William James Middle schools, and members of the Averitt Center for the Arts Dance School. The event takes place from 5:30-8 p.m. on the Bulloch County Courthouse lawn.
The William James Middle School Jazz Band will kick off the evening by performing jazz standards.
This will be followed by selections by Caitlin Mathis and Sa’sha Natson, two students from the Statesboro High School choral program. They will perform cover songs featured from the SHS Annual Collage Live Fine Arts Night. That event, which is free and open to the public, and will be held today from 6-8 p.m. at Statesboro High School.
National Art Honor Society students will add color to the sidewalks with chalk art.
The Averitt Dance Studio, directed by Jurijs Safonovs, will put on a highlight show.
Rounding out the evening will be performances by the newly formed Statesboro High School Jazz Band, and the evening’s finale will feature Statesboro Steel, a steel drum band.
“We have such a wonderful variety of entertainment,” said Elena McLendon, the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority’s office manager. “The music and groups will appeal to all ages and are such a treat to have at our First Friday.”
In addition to taking in the live entertainment, people are encouraged to visit the shops and restaurants downtown. For more information, contact the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority at (912) 764-7227.
