    Moriah Bellissimo (volleyball) was named the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Aleksandar Tomic (men’s soccer) earned Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors at the Georgia Southern University Honors Day on Wednesday.
    The pair will also be honored at the GSU Scholar-Athlete banquet April 24.

Six Eagles named All-SoCon
    Six Georgia Southern student-athletes were selected to the Winter Academic All-Southern Conference Team as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
    Women's basketball led the way for the Eagles with five selections, while Sara Curry represented the women's indoor track and field team.
    The basketball players honored were Anna Claire Knight, Jordi Cook, MiMi DuBose, Meredyth Frye and Ronnesha Smith.

Lady Gators upset APS
    MARTINEZ — The Bulloch Academy girls’ tennis team handed Augusta Prep its first home loss in five years Tuesday.
    The Lady Gators won two singles and one doubles to upset the 11-time region champions 3-2 and force a playoff on April 19 for the region championship. The win improved Bulloch’s record to 8-1.
    Meghan Barber outlasted Sophie Pollak 9-7 and Miriam Rasenberger pounded Brooke Arnold 8-1. APS’s Brooke Stevens downed Ally Cheshire 8-1.
    In doubles, Haley Mock and Lyndsey Wasdin whipped Julianna Turner and Anna Harbin 8-2. The APS duo of Ruthie Owen and Savina Patheja defeated Anna Mallard and Caitlin Barber 8-3.
    The Gator guys lost 3-2 in their final match of the regular season.
    In singles, Cody Lanier took an 8-4 victory over Drew Chamberlain and John Ellis Howell did the same to Jacob Burr. APS’s Danny Rosenblum outlasted Robbie O’Sullivan 9-8. In doubles,  Harrison McDonough and Hamp Burnside nipped Elliott Propes and Griffen Walker 8-6 while Peter Fletcher and Phelps Hunnicut dispatched Asa Johnson and Henry Blitch 8-1.
    The Region 4-AAA individual tennis tournament will be held on April 17 in Augusta.

Bulloch nips PCA
    Bulloch Academy rolled up an 8-0 lead and had to hold on for an 8-7 victory over Pinewood in Region 4-AAA baseball action Tuesday.
    The Gators (7-4 overall and 3-2 in region play) scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and looked poised to hand the Patriots their first region loss.
    In the inning, nine batters came to the plate.
    Bulloch added two runs in the second and increased it to 8-1 after six complete.
    Bulloch hosts St. Andrews School Thursday and region foe John Milledge Academy Friday. Both contests are slated for 4:30 starts. 
GSU softball sweeps Mercer
    Georgia Southern Softball picked up a pair of wins over Mercer on Wednesday afternoon at Eagle Field behind solid performances by a pair of Eagle sophomores. Brooke Red pitched a three-hit shutout in game one as the Eagles scored four runs in the first to take the 4-0 win.
    In game two GSU scored early, but saw Mercer respond to tie the game late. The Eagles won the game on a walk-off double by Lexi Allen as Red picked up the pitching win, this time in relief.

BA soccer drops a pair
    Bulloch Academy lost a pair of soccer matches to Mount de Sales Tuesday at Gator Alley.
    The Lady Gators (3-8) lost 4-1. Cate Williams scored the lone goal for Bulloch. The Bulloch boys (3-8) were blanked 8-0.
    Both squads travel to Milledgeville to battle Region 4-AAA foe John Milledge Academy Thursday.

SBCPRD midget baseball scores
    This week, the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Midget League saw several games.
    The Thigpen, Lanier, Westerfield & Deal Nationals defeated the Statesboro Floor Covering Tigers  9-2.
    The Heritage Bank of the South Pirates beat the Anderson Surveyors Orioles, 3-2.
    The Walker Total Tree Service Braves  beat the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro Cubs 14 -5, the 1st Franklin Financial Royals won over the Zaxby’s Padres 12-3 and the Optim Healthcare Phillies  beat the Digital Office Equipment Giants 3-1.
