GBI investigating Rocky Ford finances

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents are looking into allegations regarding financial practices in the Screven County town of Rocky Ford.
Statesboro GBI Special Agent-in-Charge Cathy Sapp confirmed Monday that special agents have opened an investigation regarding allegations surrounding a money situation in Rocky Ford.
Rocky Ford Mayor Jimmy Hankerson confirmed Tuesday that the investigation involves state add-on fees for tickets issued that have not been paid since 2003.
Neither he nor Sapp commented further, citing the ongoing investigation as reasons for limiting details.
Hankerson denied rumors that Rocky Ford Town Clerk Beth Smith was no longer in office, stating she has been absent for health reasons and is expected to return Thursday. Smith confirmed she is recovering and will return Thursday.
While Smith is town clerk, Rocky Ford Police Chief Pat Kile serves as police clerk, and Smith assists him in keeping records for the police department, Hankerson said.
Sapp said the investigation is expected to last at least two more weeks and said additional information may be available then, upon completion of the investigation.
“It is still in the audit stage,” she said.
