GSU baseball drops game, series to Greensboro

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Lee Gilliam tossed a quality start and the bats provided 14 hits as the UNCG Spartan took their first Southern Conference series with a 10-6 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles on Saturday afternoon.

UNCG (14-13, 3-6 SoCon) gave their starter Gilliam (2-1) all the run support he needed in his seventh start of the year. The sophomore lefthander earned the win after holding Georgia Southern (18-9, 9-3 SoCon) to three runs on five hits. Gilliam struck out four batters and walked four over six innings.
The Eagles trailed by one run after Chase Griffin rounded the bases and scored a run on a four-base error by the centerfielder Zach Leach in the fifth inning. However, the Spartans broke open the game with five unanswered runs over the sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-3 lead.
Josh Stevenson (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs — five earned — on nine hits. Stevenson pitched into the sixth inning, allowed just one walk and struck out six. Matt McCall was tagged with three runs out of the bullpen, and Drew Johnson allowed a run.
Both teams tallied over 10 hits. UNCG out hit GSU 14 to 10. Zach Leach paced the Spartans with three hits and two RBIs. A top of the order Christian Wolfe and Ray Crawford both tallied two hits, while Lloyd Enzor recorded two hits and scored two runs out of the eight hole. T.D. Davis and Garren Palmer both recorded three hits to lead the Eagles. Palmer plated three runs, while Davis scored three runs.
Georgia Southern attempted a ninth inning rally but was unable to send the tying run to the plate after Tyler Frazier struck out Arthur Owens to end the game. The Eagles scored two runs in the inning on a single by Garren Palmer.
UNCG opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning, both coming off the bat of Cambric Moye.  GSU responded with two runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Davis plated a lead off single from Ben Morgan with a base hit, Palmer scored Davis with his first of two doubles.
The Spartans struck for two runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Enzor tripled in a run before scoring himself after the throw from centerfield bounced into the Georgia Southern dugout. UNCG added three more runs the next inning off of three hits. Leach had the big hit, a two-run triple down the right field line.
