SHS out-marches competition

Statesboro cadets march at the Area 9 region championships on Saturday in Millen. Pictured left to right: Cadets James Steele, Chris Mathis, and Elijah Jackson lead the squads, with Jean Williams leading the platoon.

MILLEN — On Saturday, the Statesboro Blue Devils junior ROTC team won the Area 9 region championship at Jenkins County High School in Millen.
Many hours of practicing drill and perfecting skills had led up to the title.
In the Male Mixed events, Jean Williams led the Unarmed Platoon, which scored first place. In the Female division, Georgie Elkins led the Female Armed Squad to a commendable first place. Perhaps the most surprising first place, though, goes to the Male Mixed Armed Platoon, led by cadet Tatsy Ana James.
Tatsy Ana took over the unit only a week before the meet, but she managed to lead its members to an upset win. To see a list of all of the events that the SHS Drill Team placed in, please look below.
“This is the best we’ve done all season," said First Sergeant David Redwine, who oversees the SHS JROTC drill team. "The drill team’s biggest improvement was in armed drill. The team will continue to improve, though, because we are looking to be at our best for the state drill meet."
Statesboro’s drill team is looking forward to the State Championships on March 23 at Griffin High School.
