Inside Bulloch Business with Jan Moore - Support some great golf for a great cause

I don't think it is a secret that I am a golf fanatic. I love to play golf and to watch those infinitely more talented than I make it look easy. For those that even remotely share my passion, March 15-18 is for you.

The Schenkel Invitational collegiate golf tournament is being played March 15-17 at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro. This event is open to the public and is free. The University of Alabama is returning to defend its record-setting 2012 win, and last year's NCAA champion, the University of Texas, will also be playing.

On March 18, immediately following the Schenkel, the local branch of Wells Fargo Advisors will host the Second Annual Wells Fargo Advisors/Boys & Girls Club Classic. The tournament will be held at Forest Heights and what is raised will directly benefit nearly 400 at-risk youth the club serves each day.

According to Mike Jones, the director of the Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County, this year's tournament is being held in honor of David Ball, the founder of the club, for the significant contributions he has made to improving the lives of youth in our community.

"David was chosen for his many years of service not only to the Boys & Girls Club, but to Statesboro and Bulloch County," Jones said. "David's contributions have had a direct impact on countless young men and women giving them the opportunity to become productive members of our society. You can't put a monetary figure on that."

Last year's tournament held in honor of Dr. Hudson Powell raised $40,000, which is substantial for a one-day event. As a board member of the Boys & Girls Club, it is my hope that this event is more successful than the first.

The scramble golf tournament consists of a morning tee time at 8:30 a.m. and an afternoon tee time at 1:30 p.m. A light lunch will be served in the clubhouse between noon and 1:30 p.m. The cost is $500 per four-man team, and hole sponsorships are $100.
