Chocolate Run 5K raises $20,000 for Open Hearts Community Mission

    Statesboro’s inaugural Chocolate Run 5K was a resoundingly sweet success — despite the persistent, chilly rain on race day.
    About 550 people participated and slogged through the wet streets of downtown Statesboro the morning of Feb. 23. More than 800 registered.
    Runners received chocolate for their efforts — hot chocolate, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cake and more confections.
    The race raised $20,000 in proceeds for Statesboro's Open Hearts Community Mission, a local nonprofit that aims to “feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and restore the downtrodden” in and around Bulloch County, according to its mission statement.
    Open Hearts Director Delia Mobley said the donations will help fund a temporary living facility, which would provide the homeless with counseling and career services. She added that an announcement will be made “within the next couple of months.”
    Jennifer Douglas, a member of the 2012–13 Leadership Bulloch Class — which coordinated the event — said plans are in the works for a second race next year.
