    The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets started with a bang, knocking off Statesboro, 5-2, on Thursday at Mill Creek.
    Gage Weaver and Tyler Epps combined to allow only two SHS hits.
    Epps also drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.

Claxton edges Panthers
    CLAXTON — The Portal Panthers (0-2) fell on the road for the second-straight night, as Claxton edged away with a 7-5 win on Thursday,
    Portal took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but the Tigers answered back in the bottom half to take the lead for good.
    Brett Howell allowed one earned run in four innings pitched for the Panthers, and Lane Anderson led Portal offensively, coming a homer short of the cycle with a triple, double and single. Anderson knocked in two runs.
    Portal will play its home opener Tuesday against Treutlen County at 4:30 p.m.

Gamecocks take meet
    SYLVANIA — The Screven County boys track team won a three-team meet on Thursday, edging Effingham County by a margin of 89-67.
    First-place finishers for the Gamecocks were Rashad Hughley (High Jump — 5-foot-8), Tyler Williams (Long Jump — 20-3), Bryce Johnson (Shot — 40-5.5), Bryce Johnson (Discus — 120-2) Antone Bunbury (Triple Jump — 40-2), Dylan Koch, Tyler Williams, Quan Smith and Josh Kerson (4x100 relay — 43.97), Josh Kerson (300m hurdles — 44.06), Josh Kerson (110 hurdles 16.09), Devaughn Bryant (1600 — 5:07), Quan Smith                                                               400 — 53.18), and Chance Harkins, Tyler Williams, Devaughn Bryant and Smith (4x400 relay — 3:47).
    The Lady Gamecocks placed second behind Effingham. First-place finishers were Kaitlyn Skinner (discus — 113-0), Vaneisha Lawton (300 hurdles — 52.8),
Vaneisha Lawton (100 hurdles — 17.5) and Portia Robinson (400 — 1:06.1)

SEBMS opens season with win
    BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Middle School Lady Yellow Jackets soccer team opened their season with a 2-1 victory over Richmond Hill on Wednesday.
    Emma Britt led the SEB offense with both goals while Gracie Thompson and Emily Barnard each had one assist.
    Makayla James led the Jackets in goal by providing 11 saved shots on goal.
    The win marked the first time in girls middle school history that the Jackets have beaten Richmond Hill in soccer.
    Britt and Autumn Batchelor were named players of the game.
    The Lady Jackets play another home game next Tuesday, February 26 against South Effingham at 4 p.m.
